Working with the Bethpage Fire Department, the district tests its hydrant twice a year, ensuring that they are ready if needed in an emergency. In addition, district hydrants also receive a fresh coat of paint and maintenance check-up every year.
“Public safety is our first priority,” said William J. Ellinger, Chairman of the Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners. “Ensuring that fire hydrants work properly and maintain the proper water pressure can make all difference when it comes to saving lives.”
Bethpage Water District procedures mandate that each hydrant be tested on a regular basis. Trained technicians, in close coordination with local fire departments, test each hydrant for proper flow and pressure. A drainage test is also conducted to prevent freezing in cold weather and repairs are done on an as needed basis in strict accordance with the American Water Works Association guidelines.
“Our district’s team of professionals works hard to ensure that all our hydrants are in perfect working order,” added Gary S. Bretton, secretary of the Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners. “We expressly follow all industry standards in maintaining our hydrants.”
As part of the recent water main extension project, the district installed six brand new hydrants in front of three school buildings. Two hydrants were installed in front of Bethpage High School, two more were installed outside of the John F. Kennedy Middle School and one was added in front of Charles Campagne Elementary School.
“With the winter fast approaching, we would also like to remind homeowners and local businesses to make sure fire hydrants on or near their property are kept clear of snow and ice at all times,” concluded John R. Sullivan, treasurer of the Bethpage Water District Board of Commissioners. “It’s vitally important to ensure that firefighters can perform their lifesaving work without delays. Taking a few minutes to dig out any hydrants in your area can literally be the difference between life and death.”
